Poems by Ann Hamilton
"The theme of this poetry is that of love and good triumphing over
evil."
The Return
Not knowing the truth of self, almost too long he wrestled with the images
Of youthful dreams. Like a child, running away
He wandered into unwise ways.
Lured by lusts and passions of the flesh, he was led astray into
Following blindly after idols.
Turning to intellectual gods and
Lesser beings, he became
A creature of many masks. Mocking him in this state
Was the worldly collective consciousness
he espoused.
Aberrations and schemes repressed the goodness he contained.
Artificial feelings foolishly romanticized drew
Him into pessimism and shame.
The day broke onto this scene, playing
Itself out into a struggle with the boy's shadow
And his awareness. Lights' power won the fight
To save him from his lost self..
No longer a boy, the man saw
Two new identities. In front
Was his animus-mistress, mother, sister.
Her erotic nature filled him with understanding about his purpose in life.
She was not there
To be rejected and condemned but to lead him home.
Standing by her was the Holy Grail.
Good Wind Blowing
Mad, mad or sane, the sung song into a sand storm that
Swirled and swirled to rescue the oyster from the theft of
Plundering phantoms.
Light danced around the pearl inside, plowing terraces as it burned.
It flamed on, dimly aware that it was not alone,
Protected by powers of years past, lives spent to spend
Again.
Nearby sat fearful monsters quavering in the
Darkness of the absence of their souls. Waiting there with
Whetted appetites, they fixed their perverted passions upon
This feast.
In the shadows, lurking, they listened for an entrance stanza
On which to launch the ravishing of their prey.
From above, a new chord was struck onto these villains,
Consuming them with a roaring inferno of its' sound.
Here, evil destroyed itself.
Falling into a mighty quake beneath the peaceful plat below.
Into this place, calm swept all away except the jewel and a
partner..
The two began a dance of peace to the
Staccato of sea waves clashing against yonder shores.
